Brief pro­fi­le

The EDF Group is con­tri­bu­ting its exper­ti­se in mul­ti-modal sys­tems to the pro­ject. It will defi­ne the inter­faces wit­hin the pro­ject with the aim of achie­ving suc­cess­ful over­all sys­tem inte­gra­ti­on. The work will invol­ve stu­dy­ing the tech­ni­cal spe­ci­fi­ca­ti­ons of the indi­vi­du­al sys­tems and their con­trol tech­no­lo­gy as a means to cha­rac­te­ri­se the inter­faces. The aim is to iden­ti­fy the requi­re­ments that will result in suc­cess­ful and opti­mum con­trol of the sys­tems as well as cost-effec­tive ope­ra­ti­on. The con­cept for an elec­tro­ly­sis plant capa­ble of deli­vering up to 700 MW of power that is being deve­lo­ped in Hei­de is being rese­ar­ched in the Westküste100 real-world labo­ra­to­ry pro­ject. As part of this work, EDF will inves­ti­ga­te the necessa­ry inte­rim sta­ges and model grid-com­pa­ti­ble ope­ra­ti­on of the sys­tem.

Long-term visi­on

The con­cepts and models pro­du­ced by the rese­arch are to be used to work on a pos­si­ble expan­si­on of the 30 MW plant in Hei­de and to build fur­ther lar­ge-sca­le faci­li­ties in Ger­ma­ny. EDF the­re­fo­re sees its­elf as a future grid-com­pa­ti­ble ope­ra­tor of small and lar­ge-sca­le hydro­gen pro­duc­tion plants, with the ulti­ma­te goal of hel­ping to decar­bo­ni­se indus­try and mobi­li­ty with green hydro­gen.
