Brief pro­file

The EDF Group is con­tribut­ing its exper­tise in mul­ti-modal sys­tems to the project. It will define the inter­faces with­in the project with the aim of achiev­ing suc­cess­ful over­all sys­tem inte­gra­tion. The work will involve study­ing the tech­ni­cal spec­i­fi­ca­tions of the indi­vid­ual sys­tems and their con­trol tech­nol­o­gy as a means to char­ac­terise the inter­faces. The aim is to iden­ti­fy the require­ments that will result in suc­cess­ful and opti­mum con­trol of the sys­tems as well as cost-effec­tive oper­a­tion. The con­cept for an elec­trol­y­sis plant capa­ble of deliv­er­ing up to 700 MW of pow­er that is being devel­oped in Hei­de is being researched in the Westküste100 real-world lab­o­ra­to­ry project. As part of this work, EDF will inves­ti­gate the nec­es­sary inter­im stages and mod­el grid-com­pat­i­ble oper­a­tion of the sys­tem.

Long-term vision

The con­cepts and mod­els pro­duced by the research are to be used to work on a pos­si­ble expan­sion of the 30 MW plant in Hei­de and to build fur­ther large-scale facil­i­ties in Ger­many. EDF there­fore sees itself as a future grid-com­pat­i­ble oper­a­tor of small and large-scale hydro­gen pro­duc­tion plants, with the ulti­mate goal of help­ing to decar­bonise indus­try and mobil­i­ty with green hydro­gen.
