Brief profile
Thüga Aktiengesellschaft, based in Munich, is an investment and consulting company with local roots. As a minority shareholder of around 100 energy and water utilities, it supports their entrepreneurial development with technical know-how and advice. Together with its partners, Thüga forms the largest municipal association of local and regional energy and water companies in Germany — the Thüga Group. In total, the Thüga partners supply over four million customers nationwide with electricity, two million customers with natural gas and one million customers with drinking water. Their common goal is to shape the future of municipal energy and water supply.
Activities in the real-world laboratory
In the “West Coast 100” project, Thüga, Thüga Erneuerbare Energien and the partner company Stadtwerke Heide are testing under real conditions to what extent hydrogen addition to the existing gas network is feasible for the operation of heating systems. For this purpose, up to 20 percent by volume hydrogen is to be added in a network section with more than 200 end customers. The results will then be made available to the Thüga Group with its almost 100 municipal companies. On their way to decarbonized gas networks, the Thüga partners can thus build on the results and experience gained in the real-world laboratory.
Long-term vision
More speed in climate protection! More than 60 municipal and regional energy suppliers from the Thüga Group are calling for the rapid market launch of green hydrogen & Co. They are also campaigning for a mandatory quota for renewable gases: 25 percent by 2030 in sectors whose CO2 emissions cannot be offset through EU emissions trading. Together with further measures from a five-point plan published in 2019, this will allow greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced effectively and cost-effectively, especially in the building and transport sectors.
The energy turnaround can only succeed if the existing gas network is used for decarbonised gases. The technical solutions are already available to provide hydrogen for industrial production or for heating. The next step is now the implementation on an industrial scale — the test run in the real laboratory makes an important contribution. The long-term goal is 100 % hydrogen in the gas network. The gas networks must be prepared for this transformation and the application technologies for higher or fluctuating hydrogen contents must be advanced. www.thuega.de
